    Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

MS 271 FARM BOSS® is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 704.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Needed more power and found it. I had an MS180 when I had four 68' oaks fall on my land. That little 180 was not up to the challenge ... not even close! it was fine for topping, but these trees were 14-16" in diameter. I needed more power and a longer bar. The Farm Boss was the way to go. Have been cutting them up with no problems.Tightening and sharpening is no problem. I have a Stihl sharpener that works well with a little practice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from There is an issue the chain saw The saw was purchased 08/16/2018, I have cut 4 cords of wood already, about 7 tanks of fuel, Overall it perform well but there is one issue, The Hex nuts that hold the bar and chain onto the motor are defective, I have replaced 2 nuts so far, They keep coming loose, I have torqued them on and they fall off for know reason. I guess LOK Tite is the answer. Good Luck with this issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a beast. Cuts through trees like a hot knife through butter Best chainsaw I ever used. It's a beast. I cuts through hardwood like a hot knife through butter. I think I'm in love. Stills cost a little bit more but lord knows they are worth every penny. Can't wait too upgrade. Thanks stihl great product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is an awesome saw. After learning the procedure for starting the saw, It has worked flawlessly. There is almost no vibration and it has not failed to perform excellently as I put it through the paces.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product! Hurricane Irma created a lot of work for me. Saved my pennies and bought a good saw, not the throw aways! Done that twice, never again! Two huge oaks cut up and 3 to go! Running strong, very happy with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw I was tired of using my father in laws older 029 or his 026. Went to local hardware store told the man my needs. Which were heavy uses before deer season and to cut wood while at hunting camp for fire pit, mostly oak and pine. I live in south ms. Brought chainsaw straight from dealer to camp and filled the back of my truck twice. Has plenty of power for what I do. The salesman was correct. I got it with 20 inch bar. I probably could have got smaller saw but glad I went with this one. Never know what I may need to cut.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw! Bought a house in the country which needed some limbs and trees to come down. This saw was powerful yet manageable. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for an everyday saw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first Stihl product. Starts on the 1st pull and runs like a champ. I especially love the quick response time of the throttle; peppy and ready to go conquer any task this Oklahoma weather brings us on the farm or community.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best saw for the money period My Dad bought to replace his old 290 and itslighter and more powerful then the 290. Perfect saw for 95% of the Home owner Jobs. Bought my own the day after using it very reliable

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I’d give mine a zero if possible I didn’t get much use out of this saw before the first repair needed to be made. After the repair was made it was used 3 maybe 4 times before it quit running all together. I have a saw with less than a dozen uses that is worthless. Because it is out of it’s warranty period, nothing can be done. My suggestion, run the heck out of your equipment when you purchase to find any flaws within it’s warranty.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great saw but it’s at the dealer right know it keeps cutting on a angle Great saw the dealer I bought it from needs more training they real don’t know much about the saw other than that they are great

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Difficult to start cold I have the 271 Farm Boss. I'll keep it because it is powerful and does a good job. But it is very, very hard to start the engine cold. The "Easy2start" system is not apparent even when brand new. I hear it is a gimmick. The saw floods easily. You may need to dry out the spark plug. You may have to remove the air filter to get it going. That helped me start it once. Just keep pulling and pulling. It will start eventually then work all day long...until the next day.So it is a good machine, but not the ultimate, yet expensive. I hear they can last for many years. So I'll stick with it. I just can't recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from its just big enough to do the big jobs. I have a couple of Stihl chain sews, but had a large lime fall off one of my tree(45'' in diameter), and needed a bigger sew this one worked out great. it took know time to cut it off the tree.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happy cutting! I would highly recommend this saw this is not the first Stihl saw that I own but this is my first brand new one. A family friend got me started in tree-cutting over eight seasons ago and uses nothing but, so that's what I've always known. I was tickled pink to get it out of the store up to the cabin and for the first time ever cut down more trees and had more wood than I've ever used before. It starts great handles great feels perfect it's everything that I've always thought I would own. I would consider thinking about the size of the jobs you need to take on and then gauge your new saw on the amount of work you're going to be throwing at it I am way happy with my purchase and I would highly recommend the Farm Boss 271 to anybody.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Did not disappoint Saw cuts really well and starts great. Vibration is easy on the operator and the saw does well on the fuel. Well worth the investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I seem to have more Stihl orange than I should but the Farm Boss seems to be my go to more often than not. This saw is the perfect balance of weight and power. Currently running a 20” bar, we have been cutting beetle kill spruce near Talkeetna, Alaska. 25 trees last weekend, bucking up about half. This saw has impressed me. I only reached for the 25”, 362 a couple times. When we are not in the spruce, we are doing birch for the cabin. This saw doesn’t slow down. Great product!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Step up and get done I thought I was happy with an older 14" Stihl - I was until I knew more about what I really needed. I'm a homeowner in Jersey. Plenty of aging Birch or downed trees. Sharp blades and all, it was still a chore with a small saw.But with the Farm Boss, it's game over. The right weight, tons of power and just runs and runs. I honestly think a more powerful saw is a safer saw. It's hard work to cut, move and dispose of all that stuff. If you're cutting faster, you're not as tired. If you use a chainsaw just a couple of times a year, this is still the saw to get. It will last forever and be up for whatever comes, (or falls) your way. Getting the job done faster and safer so I can go do what I really want to do.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Gave up the ghost after an hour Struggled with the decision to buy another big box store brand saw I have had for the past five years. However, everyone said 'get a Stihl'. After my old saw failed due to a burned up piston, I figured I would give it a try. The saw started great the first couple times but after putting it thru the paces on four or five trees, It never started again. Pulled and pulled, no spark. Changed plugs, no spark. Never ran again. Took it in the service center and they pulled and pulled, no spark. Obviously the module has gone out.Over a week now, still no saw in hand. I'm sure it'll be fixed and may never give me any more issues. Or, it could continue to be a pain. Who knows at this point. Pretty disappointed in the experience however, considering all the hype

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little unit I have enjoyed the lighter weight of this unit, which has made it more manageable with plenty of power for the tree limbs I was working on. Very happy with this chainsaw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Ample power for a 20" bar, minimal vibration, very fuel efficient, all the basic maintenance is simple and quick with a scrench and a brush.Starts easy cold... I flooded it on my first go around before I realized just how little effort is actually needed. It warms up quick, idles smooth, and starting it warm feels almost like the easy start on my Stihl trimmer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it. This was my first "real saw". Starts 2nd pull everytime, and cuts like a beast.Seems the chain dulled fast, but that may have been me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So much for the 1st chain. The Farm Boss chain saw was purchased to upgrade a smaller Stihl saw that would not work. The new saw is working great especially with the motomix fuel. The first chain lasted only 2 hours. Was cutting thick Mesquite tree stumps and the 1st chain must have gotten hot. A few of the links expanded and would no longer slide through the guide groove. There was still chain oil in the reservoir, but I guess it can happen. Have purchased another chain but it has gotten dull after a couple of hours of hard work. Third new chain is standing by. Will be needing a sharpener next, still have more stumps to cut. So far it has been a good investment.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from First Time Buyer Happy After the Sale First time chainsaw purchase and user.Trying to decide what saw to purchase was the hardest part.I have a camper and am looking at clearing trees and cutting maybe 3-4 cords of firewood a year.Started out looking at the MS 251 wood boss.I really wanted a 20" bar (or so I thought)Went into Central Equipment (our area Elite Sthil dealer). After talking with the salesman I decided on an MS271 with a 20" bar.I return a couple days later and another salesmen said that the MS271 was under powered for a 20" and I needed to get an MS 311. He didn't bother to ask what or how much I was cutting.I left that store never to return.Ended up buying from my NAPA store in town. You pay a premium price for Sthil but the sales experience sucks.I bought an MS271 and so far I like it.It not to heavy and plenty of power for cutting hardwood. It goes through a fare amount of bar oil. 1 at in 3 qts of Moto Mix.As far as quality and dependablity I will have to get back on that one.But so far I think I made the right choice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Two Year Review After two years of frequent use for my MS271, I thought that an after the new wears off review would be good. I have had a few other chain saws over the years, but this was my first Stihl. It did not start out so well. I picked up the saw on 7/28 and it was back at the hardware store a day later as I could not start it. They could not either and after a new carb was installed I got it back on 8/1. It started fine now, but on 8/7 it was back in the shop with one of the bar studs pulled out. Stihl swapped the power head under warranty and I was back in business by 8/18.Since then it’s been dead reliable with no problems at all. And what a saw! With an 18” blade and the yellow RS chain my salesperson hooked me up with, it tears through logs like crazy. It has all the power I could ever need. The power, the anti-vibration system and the light weight make it the least fatiguing saw I have ever used, even after a long day cutting trees down and up. Starting is a snap. After a couple of pulls on full choke when cold, it pops right off on half choke and warms up without stalling. When warm it will start on the first pull with no choke and in between on half choke. After two saws that did not like to start, the 271 is worth the tab on starting alone. I was skeptical of the no-adjustment chain oiler, but after a lot of use it seems to be fine, using about as much bar oil as my other saws have. And I like the chain and fuel fill caps, which are typical of the quality built in. I do keep a close eye on chain tension, typically adjusting it a time or two during a full day of cutting, but that’s what I am used to anyway. The sprocket box gets cleaned out regularly, as does the rest of the saw and I use the Stihl 2-cycle oil exclusively, always with 91 octane no-ethanol fuel.I really have no complaints at all (although had I known that the MS291 was the same weight I might have sprung for that), it’s been that good for me. I will be adding a Stihl weed trimmer soon, after having also purchased the MM55 mini-cultivator – it’s a slick unit too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Recently purchased an MS271. I was skeptical on the new machine because I had always used older Stihl products like the 036. I love my MS271. Has plenty of power. Brought down and chopped up two large hard wood trees that a storm knocked across the creek. Saw has enough weight to be sturdy but not too heavy that it is hard to use for a long period of time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great saw, very powerful - but two suggestions... Although I've only used it a few times so far, I really like my new new Farm Boss saw. The only two negative comments I would have are:1. It took me searching You Tube to figure out how to start it. To me (and my wife) the manual was not clear at all. I'd recommend that Stihl revisit this important part of the manual.2. It's a little hard to start; i.e. the cord is hard to pull. Especially, for a first time user. Not too bad once you know what to expect though. Also, it's impossible for an older guy to assume the recommended position for starting. My body won't bend in that shape, ha... I have to start it on the ground with my knee holding it steady.Other than that, this saw is GREAT. Took down some trees and cut them up quickly and cleanly as expected.Great saw!
